The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
I've read quite a few of Stephen King's books and these really seem to be some of his best works. The world he describes is intricate and exciting, and for a horror/borderline fantasy book it's remarkably believable. You really expect that somewhere out there, a gunslinger named Roland (who is oddly reminiscent of Clint Eastwood in his earlier movies) is journeying ever nearer to the Dark Tower with his three companions.
