Guns of the South
I’m not a big fan of science fiction, but my curiosity was piqued when I saw a book about life in the United States after the SOUTH won the “War of Secession.” Guns of the South is a story about a world in which the Confederacy, with some help from a time traveling white supremacist group, becomes a legitimate government and neighbor to the United States. If you are a fan of war stories, this book has appeal for you. However, I was more impressed with the author’s portrayal of how the political and military leaders of the time would have reacted to a Confederate victory and the struggles of building a government. I was reluctant to read the book because I thought I might be picking up a glorification of a racist tradition. However, the book shows how the Confederacy, and the United States, would have been forced to deal with the race issue regardless of the outcome of the war.
Although there is no sequel to Guns of the South, Turtledove picks up the timeline in a series of books about the world history of late 19th and early 20th centuries with a Confederate States of America.
